Trend Alert: The Return of the Wicker Bag

Last year we saw the arrival of the wicker bag (and the year before that), and this Summer it’s being revived, yet again. It’s a trend that just won’t go away, although I’m not complaining! Even though they are weather dependent, a classic golden straw bag brightens up the mood of anyone’s ensemble. They are the perfect versatile and unique accessory. A beach only staple? No, the wicker bag transitions from beach to city-break, from large totes to small-urban styles. So, no wonder they are becoming the Summer fashion staple.

Wicker bags add texture, dimension and an air of sophistication, paying homage to Jane Birkin’s elegant style. This can all be achieved with the one simple accessory. Not to mention the endless possibilities of types of wicker bags – yes there are more than just one type. Ranging from pompom, straw, 70’s circle and basket, there are multiple ways to dress this popular trend for all occasions. For a classic all white ensemble pair an oversized pompom tote bag – adding colour and extra texture. Or, for the everyday dressed-down outfit, carry around a straw basket bag for all your errand needs. Just by pairing the perfect wicker bag, your outfit can go from French Riviera to fashion forward. It’s so effortless.

Designers are also flooding to this trend, including Phillip Lim, Giorgio Armani, Ulla Johnson and the likes of Gucci. Other brands and most notoriously Cult Gaia have created their take on the trend with the famous Ark bag - a half-moon bamboo bag having formed a following from A-list celebrities, due to its unique structure. Surely, there are no more reasons as to why you shouldn’t own this continuous trend.

Don’t worry this popular trend is going nowhere, and be ready to expect an Instagram feed flooded with basket-weave bags. It has become a coveted trend, one that plans to stick around. Everyone start swapping your leather and canvas bags for some beachy wicker totes.
