From the glamour of 1950s film starlets like Grace Kelly to the effortless beauty of
Princess Diana in the 1980s, few accessories have become as iconic as the silk scarf. While printed scarves have always been a classic staple in the elegant woman’s wardrobe, Basma Design has sought to instigate their modern renaissance. This breath-taking brand seeks to redefine how modern women view these timeless, yet modest pieces while also empowering them. As explained by founder Basma Alsthather, “female empowerment can be found in making bold choices through what we wear and that no rules need apply in expressing ourselves.”
Founded in London, Basma Design debuting their luxury chiffon silk scarves in 2017.
Inspired by geometric shapes and linear form Basma Alshather drew upon her background in architecture and design to transfer abstract art onto a lightweight, AAA grade silk canvas. While upholding the strength and integrity of luxurious silk, her unique blend of colour and pattern creates simple patterns with a touch of whimsy. Being both designed and manufactured in the UK, this British label continues to release new collections which juxtapose clean lines with the breezy silk fabric.
Part of the beauty of these scarves is that each design becomes a unique, one-of-a-kind piece for the wearer. After being hand drawn by Basma Alshather, traditional printmaking techniques are used to produce the designs. Afterwards, it is printed digitally in order not to degrade the silk.
This procedure allows for the iconic silk scarf to be reimagined for the modern woman
while also maintaining the quality and integrity of the designs. As a result, the careful and precise construction combines British handiwork with digital innovation to create wearable art with timeless beauty.
Aside from striking colours and hypnotic patterns, the scarves have the possibility for
numerous styling options. Currently available in both a square and long forms, the designs can be folded, tied or wrapped in countless ways to achieve various looks. Some options can be found on their online store and soon more designs will be available. When asked about her plans for the future Basma Alshather responded, “[I want] to develop into an international brand, expanding the product range into menswear, textiles and a more extensive range of fashion accessories. I also would
like to collaborate with designers and retailers.” With substantial plans on growing, Basma Design continues in its quest for female empowerment, independence and individuality.
Some styling options can be found on their online store (HERE) where a new collection of styles will be launching very soon.
