The Brooklyn Museum pays homage to Italian designer Pier Costante Cardin born in Sant’Andrea
Barbarana in 1922 and naturalized French Pierre Cardin in the exhibition named Highlights of
Pierre Cardin: Future of Fashion, which will be open to the public from the 20 th of July until the
5th of January 2020.
The exhibition will focus on his forty-year long career, by showing some of his most iconic works
that helped him to be defined as one of the most influent and innovative designers of the twentieth
century. Particularly, 170 objects taken from his atelier and the archives will be displayed. Among
these objects, there are several Haute Couture pieces, prêt-à porter pieces, accessories, personal
photographs and some extracts from documentaries and films.
Cardin became soon recognizable due to some creations that reflected the cultural and social change specifically of the 50s and 60s, like the 1964 “Cosmocorps” collection, which displayed a
simplicity in the cuts and ornaments, but also some peculiar elements, such as vinyl, the self-named
synthetic fabric “Cardine”, plastic and more, which mirrored an era of experimentation and
liberation. Iconic likewise are the broad-shouldered clothes of the 80s, inspired by Japanese
origami, Chinese architecture and American football uniforms.
The exhibition is curated by senior curator of Fashion and Material Culture of Brooklyn museum,
Matthew Yokobosky.
