For the 2019 edition of Salone del Mobile COS has collaborated with artist Mamou-Mani to present
“Conifera”, a 3D installation at the heart of Palazzo Isimbardi in Milan. Past and future blend together in an innovative juxtaposition of the old and the new: from the gardens of this Renaissance palace dated back to the 16th century, the structure comes out, creating a mixture that resembles those pure natural environments in which elegance and dynamism intertwine until they mingle together.
The installation is formed by 3D-created cones made of PLA, a compostable bioplastic generated from renewable resources.
The structure is presented in three colours: the translucent one is the original colour of the bioplastic, to its side, there’s white, secondly created from the original one, and brown, made by wood pulp.
Indeed, these materials together with the wood pulp used in some cones suggest a link with nature that is all surrounding and decorating the palace. From here the title “Conifera”.
The choice of this location lies behind the desire to enhance not only the union of past and present, but also a line of continuity between the austerity and elegance of the palace and the lightness of the
installation, as artist Mamou-Mani stated in the video dedicated to the installation. A pretty similar
union is to be found also in the art of 3D printing, which was able to transform in this case some
materials coming from renewable resources or natural ones, by applying this innovative technology.
Conifera is a clear example of this message: modern technology does not break up with the past but
rather embraces it by giving a new life to those recycled or simply wasted materials and enhances the beauty that lies behind their imperfection.
The installation will be open to the public from the 9th until the 14th of April.
